SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Understand the terms and definitions used in feeds and feeding.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

Understand the importance of carbohydrates and fats in animal production.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3

The learner will learn and identify proteins in the animal including the composition, build-up,

biological value, functions and foods which contain proteins.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4

Understand the different minerals and vitamins in feeding animals such as the major minerals, trace

elements, vitamins and water.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5

The learner will be able to understand digestion, absorption and utilisation in the non-ruminant and

the ruminant animal.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6

The learner will be able to understand the evaluation of feeds including digestibility, analysis and

calculating digestibility as well as understand the values of protein, energy and nutrients.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7

The learner will be able to identify and understand the classification of feeds including cereals, cereal and brewing by-products, oil and legume seeds and roughage foods such as hay, silage and dried grass. Other foods also include succulent feeds, fodder trees and shrubs, animal products and the analysis of foods.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 8

Understand veld and pasture grasses of Southern Africa.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 9

Understand and implement the calculation of rations which includes nutritional requirements of the

animal, maintenance ration and cattle on veld.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 10

The learner will be able to understand feeding for production.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 11

The learner will be able to identify and understand rations for beef, sheep and pigs as well as other

considerations in rationing.
